Maria - since 1916, this name has stood for one of Rosenthal's most popular and successful porcelain services. For generations, it's been the tableware for weddings and other festive occasions: elegant and timeless. The company founder, Philipp Rosenthal, bought the design during a trip to England. Maria is named after Philipp Rosenthal's wife. The classic, polyhedral base shape is framed by a delicate relief of finely curved pomegranates, which takes up design elements from the Biedermeier period. It's the contrasting, square surfaces with their interplay of light and shadow that give this shape its characteristic look. As early as the 1920s and 1930s, Maria was a very comprehensive service with around 170 different items. Today, Maria is still the most comprehensive tableware from the Rosenthal brand.
